Surf life saving: 12-year-old Charlie Keepa fights off strong competition

The Oceans’ Surf Life-Saving competition attracts
young people from across NZ and Australia. Amongst them is 12-year-old
Charlie Keepa of the Wainui Surf Club in Gisborne. Irena Smith went
to Mt Maunganui Beach to catch up with her. Like a sea goddess she
is testing her strength and skills against the best in the ocean. Despite the big waves she came out
first to head into the semis. The competition has attracted
more than 800 competitors aged between 11-14 years. Charlie has more than 100 in her age
group that she’s competing against. With support from mum, who is also a long-time
surf lifesaver, she has the drive to succeed. The competition ends Sunday. If Charlie keeps edging out front
like today, she will no doubt be one
of the best in the country. Irena Smith, Te Karere.
