By ca95dream , March 21, in PD24 Forum. I have been running my car Plymouth Cranbrook for over a year now with the negative terminal grounded to the engine block. That is how the car came when I bought it. The battery is very old and does not hold enough of a charge any more and so I decided to replace it. I bought an Exide 6 volt. When I bought the battery, I was reminded that the car is a positive ground.
Jose rizal strive to attain its noble objectives. Why do brussel sprouts turn pink in the middle you steam them then serve them with a lemon balsamic and a little olive oil sauce and they turn pink inside after a day or two.

Wiki User There isn't a black connection on the alternator? That would be the correct side.
If not, you could almost connect it to the bolt that holds down the alternator to the frame of the car. Check with someone else to be sure, but the negative side or connection is the common or ground wire. Just avoid hooking it to red. You do not connect any wire from the alternator to the starter. The positive wire from the alternator should run to the positive on the battery, and the negative wire if equipped should run to the engine block or any suitable ground.
Most alternators are already grounded by the bolts holding them to the engine, but some do have a negative wire.

Asked in Alternators How do you connect the wire from the alternator to the starter?
Asked in Science, Electrical Engineering How do you get electricity from a wire to a light bulb? You take a wire and stick it to the positive end of the batter. Then connect another wire to the negative end of the battery. Connect both wires to the lightbulb.
You "ground" it or connect it to a negative source that is connected got the negative end of the battery. ALternator fuses, if equipped may be on the battery post, in a fuse box, or in the wire going from the battery to the alternator. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
Remove the engine undercover. Turn the drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the drive belt from the engine. Disconnect the generator electrical connector. Remove the rubber cap and nut and then disconnect the alternator wire.
The positive wire from the alternator should run to the positive on the battery, and the negative wire (if equipped) should run to the engine block (or any suitable ground). If the negative is already connected, when you hook up the positive side, it will spark. This spark can cause a fire is the there is any fuel vapor in the engine compartment or if the battery is. All batteries have two terminals, one positive and one negative, and usually they need to be hooked up right for the equipment to work. Some equipment will be damaged if you hook the battery up.
Disconnect the alternator wire clamp from the wire clip on the alternator. Remove the alternator bolt, nut, pipe bracket and then remove the alternator from the engine. To install: Install the alternator and pipe bracket.
Does the alternator hook up to the positive or negative
Torque the bolt and nut to 27 ft. Connect the alternator wire clamp to the wire clip on the alternator. Connect the electrical wire to the alternator and install the nut. Install the alternator electrical connector.

Electrical Engineering. If alternator is hooked up in reverse polarity what happens? Wiki User The alternator is NOT suposed to spark, it charges by by generating alternating current which is converted to direct current through a diode pack known as the rectifier, and the voltage is regulated by some more electronic wizardry called amazingly enough a regulator.
Normally when alternators go wrong the charging warning light will glow, and you will get the wrong readings from your voltmeter if your car has one. Reverse polarity is the opposite of normal polarity.
Normal polarity in electronics is when you have the positive hooked up to the positive terminal and the negative to the negative terminal. Reverse polarity would be having the positive hooked up to the negative terminal and the negative to the positive terminal.
The same concept can be used with magnets. Asked in Car Batteries, Batteries What happens when you charge a car battery on the wrong polarity? You can't recharge it hooked up in reverse. You will destroy the battery or the charger if you try it.
Oct 08, Does the alternator have Just one output post? Is the a modified GM/Delco Unit. If so, one side of the electricity it produces is connected to the case. If the diode are not installed for positive ground, yes you would get a spark/dead short. You might try connecting the alternator as if it is in a negative ground system. Mar 22, Most of your items don't care if they are run + or - grnd. The radio, needs to be pos grnd, the rest would do okay with - grnd. If you choose to return to pos grnd, you have to polarize the genny, switch some wires around on the ammeter, coil, and battery, pos grnd to engine, - bat cable to solenoid and starter motor. Mar 04, does the alternator hook up to the positive or negative on the battery? my car is a plyouth horizon i bought this car and the alternator is not responding and was wondering if .
Asked in Car Batteries What is reverse polarity protection? All batteries have two terminals, one positive and one negative, and usually they need to be hooked up right for the equipment to work. Some equipment will be damaged if you hook the battery up the wrong way - reverse polarity.
Asked in Mercury Grand Marquis Where can you find the exact location of a fusible link on a mercury grand marquis They hooked the jumper cables upbackwards and it cranks but will no start replaced battery and starter any idea? Have the ECM, alternator and any other electronic components tested. Reverse polarity can destroy solid state components instantly and you may have some serious electronic damage.
Asked in Alternators, Car Batteries Why does battery go dead when hooked up but alternator is good in geo metro?
How to Understand Alternator Wires by Kurt Schanaman. to be connected to positive and negative terminals of an external voltage regulator instead of directly to battery and ignition connectors. Always match up red positive (+) wires with positive connectors and black negative (-) wires with negative connectors on such an external voltage. The negative ground 6 or 24 volt GM based alternator is configured the same as the standard 12 volt negative ground alternator. Note the position of the white insulators on the three screws securing the brush holder assembly and voltage regulator. The third screw near the top of the photo does not have an insulator. For the 6, 12 or 24 volt. Unhook the NEG. battery cable for about 5 mins, then hook it back up and go drive the truck normal about 10 miles. That's it. Asked in Chevy Impala, Chevy Colorado.
If it is otherwise running, you have probably hooked the leads backwards. The panel lights on computers are light emitting diodes and they will only light up when hooked with the correct polarity. Asked in Alternators, Car Batteries Is the battery connected to the alternator?
The positive cable on the battery is hooked to the starter. The other wire on the starter post goes up to the alternator.
Asked in European Cars, Car Batteries Replaced a battery and hooked it up backwards it sparked and then hooked it up the proper way and the car started the next morning the battery was dead bought a new battery same thing happened help? You hooked up the batteries in Series whch pumped allot of current thur the circuit.
A natural gas-powered electric generator has a turbine engine hooked to an alternator. They run the engine and it turns the alternator to make power. Asked in VW Jetta VW jetta gl it runs fine without the alternator hooked up but as soon as you hook it up it stalls and shuts off Any suggestions?
Can you turn the shaft of the alternator by hand? Is it the original alternator? With the given information i would say that the alternator is in need of replacement. Asked in Alternators, Car Batteries You have no lights but you have a new battery and a new alternator what could be wrong?
Recheck your battery to see if hooked up right. No, it wouldn't do that, not to mention most manufacturers try to do something to make the alternator as foolproof as possible, such as different sized ring terminals from the battery positive to the alternator than what's used from the alternator to the ground.
If your alternator is overcharging, you likely have a defective voltage regulator.
